Syracuse Poster Project
The Syracuse Poster Project, established in 2001, brings together community poets and artists to create an annual series of poetry posters for the city’s poster panels.
Each year the Project produces 16 art posters, each featuring an illustrated poem about the downtown, the city, or the nearby countryside. The Project enlivens the city, builds community, and spreads its value by selling poster prints and poster-related products.
The Project welcomes participation by college interns and volunteers, who help with the underlying business. We support ourselves through a combination of corporate sponsorship, charitable grants, and sales of poster related products: prints, note cards, postcards, and poetry booklets. Volunteers help us promote and sell products and develop new products.
From 2002 to 2018, the Project worked with senior illustration students at Syracuse University and occasionally with supplemental artists. In 2019, to broaden and diversify, it shifted to an open call for art. Artists can participate by asking to be included in the annual call for art. We also feature the work of independent artists working in the realm of civic art. We invite civic artists to reach us about selling their work through our online store. The work should incorporate text and image and relate to city, community, or neighborhood. For examples, see the Indy Artist section of our online Shop.
We are seeking volunteers who are interested in helping us on a variety of tasks.
