Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike

By: Clare Callahan, CNY Arts, Fall Intern 2014

The Syracuse Stage will be hosting the “roaring comedy” Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike from September 24th-October 10th.  The play won a Tony in 2013 for “best play” has been described as “deliriously funny” by The New York Times.

The play is a humorous adaptation of plays written by Anton Chekhov, who is thought to be one of the best writers of short stories in history. The premise of the play centers around one family. Sonia and Vania are two sisters who have spent most of their lives unproductive at their family’s farmhouse.  Their other sister, a self absorbed movie star named Masha, returns home with her boyfriend Spike and the result is a dysfunctional weekend of hilarity.

Vanya is being directed by Marcela Lorca.  Lorca has directed two other, hugely successful plays at Syracuse Stage (Scorched in 2013, and Caroline, or Change in 2012).  Syracuse Stage is excited to have her back again and she is excited to be back saying that she considers Syracuse Stage as being one of her “artistic homes”.

There is a set of special events set up throughout the course of the production’s run that are free for Syracuse Stage ticket holders.  The first is a party on opening night after the 8pm show.  There will be free food, live music and attendees are able to mingle with the cast!

Another fun event occurs on October 2nd. The World Martini Lounge is hosting a martini tasting happy hour celebration.  There will be free food and half-priced drinks! Gourmet doughnuts and cupcakes will be provided by Picasso’s Pastries and Cafe.

Other extra events include a moderated 20 minute discussion with the actors before the performances on September 29th and October 9th.  Also, on October 5th there is an actor Q&A following the 7 pm show.

This play is sure to bring humor to each audience this fall, and the extra events will allow audiences to engage further with the cast.   Purchase Tickets
