Dasher's Magical Gift: Backstage!
It's Dasher time at CNY Arts, and we are so excited to present "Dasher's Magical Gift" for the 4th year! This is an important holiday tradition to us and many families in New York that began in 1979 when "The Adventures of Rudolph" premiered. We love the magical memories that these shows have created and are proud that both of these shows are 100% a labor of talent and love from right here in Central New York!
In the weeks leading up to the show, we want to introduce you to some of Santa's helpers who are bringing this show to life this year!
Today, we meet Lizz Allers, Stage Manager for the show. She is responsible for making sure everyone is on track and things are going smoothly backstage during rehearsals and performances. Lizz has a love for stage managing and the processes involved with behind the scenes. Staying involved with Dasher is essential to Lizz because of the magic this show brings to kids every season and it is “an exciting opportunity to bring a brand new show to life, starting with the playwright’s imagination and slowly growing into a real performance”. Lizz says that although geared towards kids, anyone who loves the holidays will enjoy how heartwarming and sweet the show is.
A fan of the whole show, Lizz’s favorite parts are when the snow starts falling as Dasher is flying stating, “even though I know it’s coming and...how it happens, it...is pretty magical every time” and the reindeer costumes. According to Lizz, “Lindsey, our designer, did an amazing job on them. They look so majestic and strong but also beautiful”. If she could chose another role in this production, being a former dancer, she would love to play a reindeer because of their moments in the show.
Of any surprise the audience may find in the production, the beginning and entrance of the first characters is a big surprise amongst all the holiday magic of the show. She is reminded every year why she loves doing theatre, especially for children: the kids. They are her motivation for doing the show every year. They engage with laughter, cheers, boos, and cries which are all part of an expression of feelings that makes Lizz want to keep ensuring opportunities for kids to have exposure to the arts.
Lizz has an amazing team she works with every year but can’t imagine doing this without her assistant, Marisa, who reads Lizz’s mind and allows her to be in two places at once, Larry, the director, “I am in constant awe of his talent and dedication to this show and to the whole team. I love bouncing ideas off him and working on this show together”, and of course, “it’s great to have Santa around. He makes sure everyone is on their best behavior, and it’s impossible to be stressed out when you’re working with him”.
A message from Lizz: I hope that this show enables families to talk about the meaning of being selfless and sharing, and also to talk about the arts - what the kids liked, what they didn't like, what surprised them.
