CNY Jazz Presents Saxophone Superstar Saturday

Fresh from his appearance at the M&T Jazzfest, acclaimed bassist, studio owner and bandleader Peter Mack brings his Macktet to downtown Syracuse with special guest saxophonist Gary Smulyan, who will be making a rare appearance in Central New York. On Saturday June 17th at 8:00 p.m. Smulyan will preside over a full evening of national caliber jazz, backed by an all-star combo led by Mack that includes Joe Carello on saxophone, Steve Brown on guitar, Dino Losito on keyboards, and Mike Melito on drums. Tickets are $15 in advance or at the door, and students with valid ID will be admitted for only $5.

"Peter has put together a real Who's Who in Upstate New York jazz as his Macktet, and this will be the first time they've performed in Jazz Central," said Larry Luttinger, host of the event. "Adding the world's most acclaimed baritone saxophonist to this mix of personnel will likely blow the roof off our theater, it will be so explosive. I'd bring safety glasses to this gig."

Perennial jazz poll winner Smulyan is no stranger to Central New York audiences, having performed with the CNY Jazz Orchestra and acted as national clinician for the CNY Jazz SummerJazz Workshop. A six-time Grammy Award winner, he has topped nine international polls, and has worked in many bands including Woody Herman's Herd, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Chick Corea, Tito Puente, Ray Charles, B.B. King and Diana Ross, Joe Lovano and Dave Holland. He has recorded ten albums as a leader. He presently teaches at Amherst College and has taught at Juilliard and Rutgers.
