Behind the Curtain: Catherine Kingsley's Costumes

During the first week of December at the Crouse Hinds Theater in the John H. Mulroy Civic Center in downtown Syracuse, CNY Arts will bring to the stage Dasher’s Magical Gift, an annual holiday show for central New York children.

First produced in 2014, Dasher is a 21st century update on CNY Arts’ 36-year tradition of offering an affordable holiday ballet narrated for young children and families. The revamped and modernized production is designed to be both educational and entertaining for youngsters, especially for those whose first experience with live theater and dance is at Dasher. The story finds Dasher, the fastest reindeer on Santa’s team, just a few days before Christmas unable to fly- can Peppermint, his biggest reindeer fan, help Dasher in team for the big night?

In it’s premiere in 2014, Neil Novelli, wrote, “At every turn it offers graceful and lively dancing, splendid sets and costumes and a brisk, unfailing sense of humor.”

Catherine Kingsley, the Founder of Kingsley Ballet Costumes, which specializes in creating costumes for dancers, is the creative designer that made the tutus for the dancers who represent the Spirit of Christmas (as seen in the photo). The costumes are specifically designed for the best comfortable fit for dancers that move with every step the dancer takes to enhance their performance.

Her costumes are designed and created for the individual dancer, dance companies, productions and competitions. Catherine created all the costumes for her New York City based Classical Ballet Company - the Anglo-American Ballet, for over 25 years. Recent creations have appeared on the stage in America and Europe at the Youth America Grande Prix, American Ballet Theatre and the Genee International Ballet Competition in the United Kingdom, among others.

Catherine was born in England and trained at the Royal Ballet School and the Royal Academy of Dance, of which she is a recipient of the Solo Seal Award and a lifetime member. Performance credits include the Royal Ballet, Bavarian State Opera Ballet and the Milan Opera Ballet. Her teaching credits include Boston Ballet, the French Academie of Dance/ STEPS/ Broadway Dance Center and Ballet Arts in NYC, Marymount Manhattan College, Stephen’s College and here in Syracuse at Dance Centre North and the Ballet & Dance Center.

Among her many achievements, Catherine was a fashion model for Dior and currently appears in television/ movies & commercials as an actress. Presently, she teaches in the Tri-State area and is a faculty member of the Dance Theatre of Westchester.
